AIA Michigan on…Creative Downsizing (Part II)
Part II of the AIA Michigan Panel Discussion Series on Creative Downsizing focuses on what’s known as planned shrinkage. In this process, rather than waiting for houses to become abandoned and then pulling them down, demolish entire city blocks and even whole neighborhoods. Michigan state law currently allows buildings and land that are foreclosed for delinquent taxes to become the domain of the county land banks, thus giving communities a powerful tool for change. The Genesee County Land Bank has sparked a huge surge in Flint redevelopment projects and won national praise from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
